Founding father statue creator may call it to a vote

How’s this for a headline? “Sir John A. Macdonald’s statue sculptor versus the mayor who had his creation removed?”

It could be the next best thing to seeing the recently banished father of confederation running against incumbent Lisa Helps for mayor of Victoria in October’s election.

“I am seriously considering it,” said artist John William Dann Friday. “It keeps pulling at me.”

Stop the presses!

Perhaps Sir John A. won’t have to be repatriated to Ontario after all, as provincial Minister Todd Smith and Premier Doug Ford offered.

Whatever happens, Dann said, “democracy has to be stood up for.”

Democracy, he said, was not on display Aug. 11 when the statue of Macdonald was removed from the front of the city hall in British Columbia’s capital city and placed into storage.

“People were not properly consulted,” he said.
