Sitting on a stage and smiling while Donald Trump was referred to as a tyrant and compared to Syria’s Bashar al-Assad hasn’t won Chrystia Freeland any fans in the White House.

According to two independent Canadian sources, people who have been in communication with the White House in recent days, Freeland’s appearance on the Taking on the Tyrant panel is well-known in the West Wing and it is not popular.

“Everyone knows about it and they aren’t happy,” one source who asked not to be identified told me.

“They are pissed.”

It was last week that Freeland, Canada’s foreign affairs minister and chief NAFTA negotiator, appeared on stage in Toronto for a panel discussion on dealing with tyrants. The panel was introduced with a video that compared Donald Trump to China’s Xi Jinping, an actual dictator, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, a man known to jail or kill his opponents.
