Trump had long been enraged with Sessions over the Mueller probe.

Jeff Sessions, the former Alabama Senator who had long been in U.S. Donald Trump’s doghouse as Attorney General, has resigned.

Reports indicate the resignation was in response to a White House request that Sessions depart.

The resignation comes after the U.S. mid-term elections, in which the Democrats won the House while Republicans strengthened their majority in the Senate.

Sessions and Trump started on good terms, as Sessions was the first U.S. Senator to endorse Trump during the Presidential campaign. Sessions provided Trump with credibility on cracking down on illegal immigration, and helped Trump’s campaign get off the ground.
