Institutional Sexism
Guest Commentary by David Scott Gauthier

Although I am not a journalist, I feel that in this day and age the mainstream journalists no longer serve the public like they once had. If you keep up with things like CBC or times colonist, you will be aware of the topic of institutional racism. I wanted to write on institutional sexism today because that is where I believe the majority of the dirty money comes from. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for over 15 years and traveled throughout Canada. I feel the second biggest issue Canadians face is gambling addiction, the east coast has slot machines in every bar and a good chuck of the elderly are addicted to them, but here on the west coast the biggest vice going is prostitution, there is a fair bit of policy written on the worlds second oldest profession here in Canada, prostitution itself is legal here, but the street corner profession has been cleaned up a bit, woman that do such have to take tests and pay applicable taxes, however what if I were to say to you that there is an easier way to practice such well ignoring said policy and that the hospitality industry takes advantage of that through a servers tip pool? what if some front of house managers not only take a large cut of that tip pool from servers but some of them even suggest potential clients and in some instances pay on behalf of them to gather information, what if said practice is technically illegal but ignored by your local police and court system? I ask these questions, because I leave it up to you to decide for yourself, keep in mind the legitimate half of the hospitality industry is suffering a great deal due to covid-19, but again, if you examined the books of some of the establishments you yourself may have frequented in your time here, you may very well find the servers tip pool is simply setup for prostitution, and if you sat down and thought about it, the education system is taking funds from this profession knowingly, and the healthiest thing we could do from a societal perspective is force our local politicians to acknowledge this exploitation of the current system, and clean up the policy around prostitution by tying it with education and offering a discount to their education if they go through the proper steps and stop allowing these two institutions from exploiting these woman.

Sadly, institutional sexism goes well beyond those two institutions, its a funny thing that “the proud boys” are being labeled terrorists by Canadians, back in NB in a small military town named Oromocto, I went into the local RCMP office there and noted two men paying “parking tickets” to a woman who is most likely a prostitute employed by the RCMP under your tax dollars, such is my view of it anyhow, I have written all my local MLA members to try to address getting men that join the Armed Forces in Canada married, i’ve seen work programs abused in all sorts of ways, I figured a semi decent Christian initiative might be worthwhile to suggest, so that is what I wrote every BC MLA aside from John Horgan back between Dec 20 2020 to Jan 06 2021, I’ve yet to hear back from a single MLA on my idea though, it would probably require pressure from many voters, ie you. I am also looking into getting the crown courts to address the inaction of the complaints department setup to oversee the RCMP, they’ve refused to address the issue seriously.

  1. I understand walking into an RCMP office doesn’t count as research, to be honest I walked in there to bring attention to the server matter and ended up with the woman behind the counter refusing to look into it or file a report because her only argument being was prostitution is legal in Canada, it wouldn’t help if I described the four play had between her and one of them there paying for their parking violation, yeah, just not really proud to be Canadian.
