I wish to respond to an article of yesterday carried in your paper by Vice Admiral (Retir’d) Mark Norman of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Mr. Norman addresses the present American action on tariffs.
In his attack on America he says :
‘we either believe in, and live by, the principles of a rules-based system and the power of alliances and multilateralism; or, we slip into the behavioural model of Golding’s book where Jack runs amuck and the entire island is mired in chaos, conflict and savagery.’
As a former leading Canadian Military Officer how can he speak of ‘a rule based system ‘ when he was part of the system that violated ( and still does) the international order whereby Canada has not paid its way in NATO as it had agreed to do over a decade ago? This year the fee is $40 billion.
