Scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine have confirmed that one dose of Merck’s MMR ProQuad measles vaccine caused a previously healthy baby to develop a fatal case of leukemia. Days after receiving the vaccine, the one-year old girl was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

In a study, researchers reported that her death was a fatal case of vaccine-associated measles encephalitis in an immunocompromised child. The study asserted that “the infection was confirmed by whole-genome RNA sequencing of the measles virus from brain tissue.” The researchers claimed that the vaccine measles virus hypermutated to a fatal strain that invaded the brain and killed the child.
