One of Alberta’s most prominent conservative voices and a former leader of the province’s opposition is calling on Ottawa to acquiesce to a series of demands — or risk separation.

Brian Jean was the former leader of the Wildrose Party before it merged with the Progressive Conservatives in 2017 to create the United Conservative Party, losing the leadership race to Jason Kenney.

Jean has stayed largely out of provincial politics since then, denying rumours in 2019 he might soon return.

But the former Fort McMurray-Conklin MLA, in a column posted by the Edmonton Journal Saturday, calls for four “absolute necessities” from Ottawa — and stresses if those demands aren’t met by Canada, then Alberta should leave.

“I believe, right now, that most Albertans believe that Canada is broken,” Jean said in an interview with CBC News. “There are some fundamental problems with our Confederation, with our country, and Albertans, for the most part, want to fix it.”

  1. I agree with much or almost all of what Brian is promoting but there is one “Fly in the Ointment” .

Alberta can go absolutely nowhere as long as the People of B.C. continue to keep B.C. NDP Premier John Horgan, His Brain Geoff Meggs, Eby, and the rest of their Minions in power in Victoria .

Western Separation needs a Coast line and without it the discussion is simply Juvenile and Wishful Thinking .

B.C., Alberta, Sask, and Manitoba could very well Draw a Line at the Manitoba and Ontario Border and it would work beautifully except without B.C., the Coast, and Seaports it is a waste of time to even discuss .

I believe very strongly that each and every Canadian Province with a Conservative Premier should speak up for Alberta and the rest of the Prairie Provinces and demand better for all of them .

I believe that if those Conservative Led Provinces including the powerful Ontario Ford Government unified they would get the ear of a dithering, inept, impotent, PM Justin and we might get some positive results .

In the meantime B.C. Liberals must engage the population and do a better job than Christy Clark did in the past Provincial Election, how Clark could manage to “Grasp Defeat Out of the Jaws of Victory” is beyond me, why anyone has any time for Clark today makes me sick .

Clark contributed greatly to what is taking place in Alberta and the rest of Western Canada and she should Hang Her Head in Shame .

Imagine Clark leaving such Large Surplus for the NDP to Bribe the Tax Payer with, how stupid could she be ?

  2. The Liberals in BC are infested with federal liberals.
Conservatives in BC are connected to the federal ones – think Andrew Scheer.
BC needs a centre right party.
Are there any potential great leaders to create and run a centre right party in BC ?
