The swirl and drama of world events can take the mind from all that counts. When a greatly loved monarch, the longest-reigning and probably the most pleasant regent in all history, dies, it steals the headlines from everything else.

Or when the disastrous embrace of the global warming fanaticism and the malice of Vladimir Putin leaves most of Europe in fear of the winter to come and desperately seeking supplies of natural gas or reverting (dread moment) to coal-fired backups, we know the time is tense. And as Putin rattles for the first time in 60 years the nuclear sabre, he reawakens a dread that has been dormant since the Cuban missile crisis.
